In today's TV landscape, viewers have more choices than ever before. TV is no longer limited to one place or one provider. However, this abundance of content has also brought complexity. The fragmentation of sources and devices has made it difficult for users to discover and manage the content they like.

Create a universal search that brings together content from different services and streaming providers, allowing users to conveniently find new content from a single place.

Include a watchlist feature that notifies users of any upcoming releases and content from their subscriptions, allowing viewers to curate their own personalized content.

Offer users with smart recommendations based on their preferences and watching habits. This enables viewers to discover and consume tailored content.

By conducting in-person interviews and surveys, I gained insights into existing user behaviors regarding show discovery and management. This involved studying device usage, the current TV Guide market, and user preferences for managing shows.

User Reviews On App Stores

I carefully reviewed hundreds of user reviews and comments on the Play Store and Apple Store. I categorized them based on importance and identified valuable feedback that highlighted pain points and areas for improvement.

The digitization of TV has transformed how we watch, the type of content we see, and how it's delivered. Traditional ads that interrupt shows are being replaced by more engaging content, and new technologies allow viewers to skip unwanted parts. While news, live sports, and big events still follow a linear format, most other content is moving towards video-on-demand (VOD).

I sketched and brainstormed many ideas with my product team and created low-fidelity wireframes and prototypes for testing. This process resulted in four main views: watchlist, explore (for discovery), TV listings, and settings (for favorites and alerts management).

Dark Color Scheme

Traditionally, the apps had lighter themes due to web-based content. However, I intentionally chose a dark theme for the app because users often use the app later in the day, in rooms with dimmed lights. Therefore, a dark theme helps reduce eye strain in darker settings.

I created a components library in Sketch that would be used throughout the app. This library included elements such as colors, typography, grids, icons, buttons, form elements, error and empty states, show cards, and content cards. I designed a simple and fun experience to build a wishlist. I drew inspiration from Tinder-style cards, where users could swipe up to like a movie or show, or swipe down to dismiss it. Any liked items were automatically added to the user's watchlist.
